Do I Need Nutritional Supplements: Part II?
Let's continue where we left off last week with a discussion of popular supplements found in the local gym. There's two more supplements of noteworthy application to the fitness enthusiast and athlete that I didn't have the time to address last week.
I could probably discuss supplements until I'm blue in the face, but the most important thing to remember is that not all supplements are for you. Pay attention to the label, ingredients, and indicated applications, and don't assume that just because it's there, you should take it. Most gyms and health clubs carry a supplement that would benefit almost anyone, but the actual supplement differs from person to person. My recommendation is to approach a personal trainer or coach with the supplement you're considering, tell them your goals, and see what they say.
An internet search engine can't always size you up and tell you if something you ingest will be beneficial or harmful, so talking to a "real person" is a good idea. Triathlete Tip of the Week
The maxim "endurance before speed", for the most part, is a good rule to follow. The exception to this rule is when you're dealing with an athlete who has absolutely no speed. I usually observe this phenomenon in characters who got into triathlon later in life, but didn't really play any explosive sports as youngsters, like basketball or football. Their bodies just don't know how to produce high amounts of force while working above anaerobic threshold.
For these individuals, devoting the entire off-season to base training, with absolutely zero tempo efforts, is a bad idea. This is even more true if you're just getting into the sport, and haven't had a chance to grow your race legs.
Training the anaerobic and aerobic systems simultaneously is not ideal, but sometimes necessary. For those individuals for whom it is necessary, I recommend at least 30 minutes above anaerobic threshold in each sport at least once a week during base training.
