Coach Profile: Ed Winczowski

As a father, educator, owner of a fixer upper house, and athlete himself, Ed Winczowski is aware how dynamic life can be and the twists and turns it presents.  Combing endurance sports in the mix can often be confusing and frustrating.  He will help you solve this puzzle with an open minded approach utilizing various periodization models to get the best workout that time permits to maximize your results.

He simply loves coaching and the challenges it presents to help others achieve their goals.   His certifications include USA Triathlon Level II and USA Cycling.  He adds a lot of value to his ongoing education, and is always listening and reading about what other coaches and athletes have done or are thinking about doing to improve on their results.  He also started coaching high school track and cross country in 1991 and has worked with athletes of all abilities and ages from middle school through masters.

Times are changing in the coaching world with new technologies and to get the most out of Ed’s coaching abilities, he requests that his athletes log their training data with a GPS, heart rate monitor, or power meter.  Such information allows him to see what exactly is going on with an athlete’s training and to make adjustments as needed.

As an athlete, he started racing at the age of 5 with the local YMCA swim team.  He’s gone on to compete in track and cross country through the college ranks, raced mountain bikes and earned multiple podium finishes in age group triathlons since 1992.  Outside of the competitive realm he loves backpacking in Southern UT, snowboarding, cross country skiing, and rock climbing.

Ed holds BS degrees in Marine Science, Biology with minors in Chemistry and Geosciences from East Stroudsburg University and another BS in Science Education from Southern Utah University.  He current resides in Chula Vista, CA with his wife Allison, son Luke, and black lab Emma.

Here's what a few of Ed's athletes have to say:

"As a injury prone runner I looked for new ways to improve my running while
keeping my injury risk down to a  minimum. During the 16 weeks of coached
track workouts I worked with Ed, I learned new drills that allowed me to
increase my intensity and remain injury free. I haven't been injured in the
3 months since while continuing to set personal bests in the 5K and Half
Marathon."

Jayson Patryn, Chula Vista, CA

"Ed is a great guy and even better coach. He helped me train and complete a half-ironman, iron distance triathlon, and a 50-miler endurance run. He helped me set realistic goals and achieve them in a timely manner. Without his advice and guidance, I would not have had the level of success last year in my races and endurance events. Ed was very committed to my training and racing.  Having him always be accessible was a great asset."

Andrew Voss, Philadelphia, PA

"I started running with Ed’s track group last spring and what a difference it made in the events I participated in during the year.  When I started I was only able to finish half of the workout, but by the end of the season I was running 7:00 minute miles and feeling strong.  Not bad for a 45 year old woman.  Ed has also helped put together a masters swim program with our local YMCA.  I can already tell that I am going to be a more powerful competitor next year.  Ed is a great motivator and really knows his stuff.   Thanks for all your help and advice!"

Sue Kopas, Chula Vista, CA

"Ed is a very intelligent coach that does a terrific job at giving me a variety of work outs, setting difficul but attainable goals, and is always on top of my power and run pace data. He is also very knowledgeable about training methods and analyzing power profiles. Thanks so much Ed."
